Midtown Manhattan Office Shooting Kills 4, Including Cop

Gunman Kills 4, Including Police Officer, in Midtown Manhattan Office Shooting
A tragic Midtown Manhattan office shooting left four people dead on Monday, including a New York City police officer, and another person seriously injured. The shooter, identified as 36-year-old Shane Tamura from Las Vegas, later took his own life, according to authorities.
Attack Unfolded at 345 Park Avenue
The shooting took place at 345 Park Avenue, a skyscraper housing major firms including the NFL headquarters, Blackstone, KPMG, and Rudin Management. Just before 6:30 p.m., Tamura exited a BMW with an M4 rifle and entered the building’s public plaza, security footage shows.
Inside, he opened fire in the lobby, killing Officer Didarul Islam, a corporate security detail officer, and shooting a woman who attempted to take cover. He continued to fire, fatally wounding a security guard and another man.
Tamura then took the elevator to the 33rd floor, where he shot one more person before turning the weapon on himself.
Officer Islam Remembered as a Hero
Officer Islam, 36, was an immigrant from Bangladesh who had served with the NYPD for 3½ years. He leaves behind two sons, and his wife is expecting their third child.
“He died as he lived. A hero,” said NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. “He put himself in harm’s way to protect others.”
Timeline of the Gunman’s Cross-Country Journey
Investigators believe Tamura drove from Las Vegas to New York, passing through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey in the days leading up to the attack. Authorities recovered a rifle case, ammunition, a revolver, and medication prescribed to Tamura from his vehicle.
Officials noted he had a documented mental health history, but no known ties to the building, its tenants, or the real estate industry.
Panic in Midtown as Shots Ring Out
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos and confusion. Nekeisha Lewis, who was dining nearby, recalled hearing “a quick two shots and then rapid fire.” People fled the area with their hands raised.
Inside the building, workers barricaded themselves in conference rooms. Jessica Chen told ABC News she texted her parents goodbye as she feared for her life.
Ongoing Investigation and City Impact
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed that one man remains in critical condition and several others were treated for injuries sustained during the evacuation. He emphasized that the city is still working to piece together Tamura’s motive.
While New York City has seen declining gun violence this year, the Midtown Manhattan office shooting has shaken its corporate community. This marks the second fatal workplace shooting in the area in under a year.
