Texas Democrats Seek Donations to Prolong Walkout Blocking Trump’s Redistricting Plan

Texas Democrats are urgently seeking donations to support their extended walkout. Their goal is to block a Republican redistricting plan backed by Donald Trump. In an effort to prevent a vote, around 50 lawmakers fled to Illinois, leaving the Texas House without the quorum it needs to operate.

Why Are They Walking Out?

President Trump has pushed for redrawing congressional maps to favor Republicans in the 2026 midterms. Texas Democrats believe the proposed changes would undermine fair representation. By leaving the state, they’ve halted legislative activity and bought time—at least temporarily.

Costs Mounting Fast

Rep. Gene Wu used campaign funds to buy a microphone for press briefings. However, hotel and travel expenses are being covered by the Democratic Caucus. Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke’s group, Powered by People, also contributed funds, though the exact amount remains undisclosed.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton responded by launching a bribery investigation into the group’s financial involvement. In turn, O’Rourke dismissed the accusation and turned the attention into a fresh fundraising push.

Facing Fines and Legislative Pressure

Lawmakers could face fines of $500 per day for their absence. These fines cannot be paid with campaign or office funds. Given their modest monthly salary of $600, such penalties would be a heavy burden. Still, Democrats are determined to resist until the special session ends on August 19.

Although Governor Abbott can immediately call another session, Democrats are prepared for a prolonged battle.

Small Donors Drive the Movement

Despite the financial strain, support has poured in from small-dollar donors. Rep. James Talarico noted that contributions of $5 to $15 are fueling the effort. The caucus even launched a donation website with suggested amounts ranging from $25 to $2,500.

Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has welcomed the lawmakers but confirmed he hasn’t provided funding. According to Talarico, the group declined any such offer, emphasizing that this fight should be funded by everyday citizens.

High Stakes, Broad Support

Governor Abbott has asked Texas’ Supreme Court to remove Wu from office and launched an investigation into Democratic donors. Wu dismissed the bribery claims as absurd and stressed that no one left the state for personal financial gain.

Progressive organizations have stepped up as well. Some offer media support, while others coordinate logistics. The Democratic National Committee has provided data and organizing help.

Determined to Continue

Luke Warford of the Agave Democratic Infrastructure Fund said supporters understand the cost of doing nothing. If Republicans succeed in redrawing the maps, Democrats could face greater challenges in future elections. Compared to that, the current expenses are minor.

Lawmakers are staying at a hotel near Chicago. On Wednesday, the hotel was briefly evacuated due to a false bomb threat. Still, the group remains unified and committed to its mission.

Rep. John Bucy III summed up their resolve:
“There’s too much at stake to worry about hotel bills. We’re here to protect democracy.”
