Russia Bombards Kyiv as Apartment Block Collapse Kills 9
Russia launched a third consecutive day of massive drone and missile attacks across Ukraine on Thursday, killing at least nine people after a residential apartment building collapsed in Kyiv.
The strikes marked one of the largest aerial assaults since the war began in 2022, according to Ukrainian officials.
Apartment block destroyed in Kyiv
The deadliest strike hit Kyiv’s Darnytsia district, where a nine-story apartment building was flattened during the overnight bombardment.
Emergency crews spent hours digging through debris while smoke continued rising from the destroyed structure.
Officials said:
- All 18 apartments in the building were destroyed
- At least nine people were killed
- More than 30 residents were injured
- Around 20 people were believed missing
Among the victims was a 12-year-old girl, according to Vitali Klitschko.
Authorities declared Friday a day of mourning in the Ukrainian capital.
Russia intensifies nationwide attacks
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Russia launched more than 1,560 drones against Ukrainian cities since Wednesday.
The latest attacks damaged approximately 180 sites nationwide, including:
- More than 50 residential buildings
- Energy infrastructure
- Air bases
- Transportation facilities
Russian forces also launched ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and Kinzhal hypersonic missiles during the assault.
Ukraine says pressure on Moscow is needed
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha linked the timing of the attacks to the summit between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in Beijing.
Sybiha argued that both leaders have enough influence to pressure Vladimir Putin to end the war.
He wrote on X that “only pressure on Moscow can make him stop.”
Ukrainian air defenses under severe strain
Ukraine’s air force described the recent wave of attacks as the largest since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.
Air force spokesperson Yurii Ihnat said the country’s air defenses are facing enormous pressure despite intercepting most incoming targets.
Ukrainian officials reported:
- 693 Russian targets intercepted or jammed
- 41 missiles neutralized
- 652 drones intercepted
- 24 locations suffered direct hits
Power outages were reported in Kyiv and 11 other regions after strikes damaged energy infrastructure.
Residents describe terror overnight
Survivors described scenes of panic as explosions shook residential neighborhoods during the early morning hours.
Seventy-eight-year-old resident Lyudmila Hlushko said the explosions began around 3 a.m.
She described hearing rockets before the building violently shook and windows shattered across the neighborhood.
Another resident, Nadiia Lobanova, called it a “terrible night,” saying residents continue trying to adapt to repeated attacks despite the trauma.
Defense contractor office destroyed
The Kyiv office of Skyeton, a defense contractor specializing in reconnaissance drones, was also destroyed during the strikes.
The company said it had previously relocated production facilities in anticipation of potential attacks.
U.N. aid vehicle attacked in Kherson
Ukraine also accused Russian drones of targeting a marked United Nations aid vehicle in the southern Kherson region.
Officials said the vehicle was struck twice while aid workers were delivering humanitarian assistance. No injuries were reported.
Diplomatic fallout spreads across Europe
The escalating violence has triggered political reactions beyond Ukraine.
Additional developments included:
- Hungary summoned the Russian ambassador after a drone strike near its border
- Latvia’s Prime Minister Evika Silina resigned after political fallout linked to regional drone incidents
- Britain accelerated deliveries of air-defense systems to Ukraine
British Defense Secretary John Healey described Thursday’s attacks as “shocking.”
Ceasefire hopes continue fading
The renewed bombardments appear to undermine recent suggestions from Trump and Putin that negotiations could eventually end the conflict.
A temporary May ceasefire requested by Trump reportedly reduced fighting only briefly before major strikes resumed across Ukraine.
The war, now entering its fifth year, continues to escalate with increasingly large missile and drone attacks targeting civilian infrastructure.
