Massachusetts Assisted Living Fire Kills 9, Injures 30 in Fall River
A devastating fire at the Gabriel House assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, has killed nine people and injured 30 more, including five firefighters. Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the deadly blaze, which erupted late Sunday evening.
The facility, home to around 70 residents, went up in flames just before midnight. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and intense flames, immediately launching rescue efforts. One resident remains in critical condition.
“This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,” said Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon. “We extend our deepest condolences to everyone grieving today.”
Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Investigation
Approximately 50 firefighters responded to the emergency, including 30 off-duty personnel who rushed to help. Several residents were seen hanging from windows, signaling for rescue. First responders pulled dozens to safety despite the treacherous conditions.
The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services has launched a full investigation into what caused the fire. Governor Maura Healey also issued a public statement, offering state support to the victims and their families.
Community Grieves as Families Recount Horror
Jarren Oldrid, whose 67-year-old father Steven was hospitalized for smoke inhalation, described the chaos and fear. “It’s just a whirlwind trying to figure out what happened, how something so major could happen so quickly,” he told the Associated Press.
Governor Healey called for unity in the wake of the disaster. “I know the people of Fall River are strong and resilient,” she said. “Now is the time for us to come together and support one another through this terrible tragedy.”
As the investigation continues, the local and state communities remain on high alert, pledging full resources to determine what went wrong and prevent future tragedies.
