Ex-Premier League Star George Baldock Dies in Pool Tragedy

Former Premier League footballer George Baldock has died at age 31 after drowning in a swimming pool in Greece, just one day before flying home to celebrate his son’s first birthday.

An inquest in Buckinghamshire ruled his death accidental. A post-mortem found no drugs or alcohol in his system. The cause of death was confirmed as drowning. Doctors also noted Baldock had an enlarged heart, making him vulnerable to irregular heart rhythms.

The tragic incident occurred in October 2024 at his home in Glyfada, Athens. Baldock had recently signed with Panathinaikos after leaving Sheffield United, where he played more than 200 matches.

Attempts were made to resuscitate him, but he could not be saved. His partner had raised concerns after being unable to reach him. A property owner later found his body in the pool.

His family released a heartfelt statement:
“George, you were the most special father, fiancé, son, and friend. Your enthusiasm brought so much love. You will live on in your beautiful son.”

Born in England, Baldock represented Greece 12 times through his grandmother’s heritage. His football career included time with MK Dons, Oxford United, and a notable seven-year spell at Sheffield United.

Tributes poured in from the football world.
Panathinaikos wrote: “We are shocked by the loss of our George. Our thoughts are with his family.”
Sheffield United also shared condolences, calling Baldock “extremely popular” and “sincerely missed.”
