KFC Launches Free Chicken Deal in Comeback Strategy

KFC Offers Free Chicken in Bold Comeback Effort Amid Rival Success
KFC has acknowledged that it’s lagging behind competitors like Chick-fil-A, Popeyes, and Raising Cane’s — and now it’s launching a “Kentucky Fried Comeback” to win back customers, starting with free food.
Free Chicken Buckets for Loyalty Members
As part of its new strategy, KFC is offering a free bucket of fried chicken to customers who spend $15 and are subscribed to its rewards program. This promotion aims to attract fast-food lovers who may have recently shifted their spending elsewhere.
“If people can give their ex a million second chances, I hope our fans can give us one,” said Catherine Tan-Gillespie, president of KFC US.
Why KFC Is Pushing a Comeback
According to data from Restaurant Dive, KFC’s 2024 sales dipped by 4% to $4.34 billion, while competitors surged. Chick-fil-A reported $22 billion in sales and continues to expand aggressively across the US and UK. Wingstop partnered with the NBA and now operates over 2,350 locations. Raising Cane’s collaborated with Post Malone to open a custom-designed restaurant and launched collectible merchandise.
Where KFC Stands in the Rankings
In a USA Today survey of the best fast-food chains of 2024:
-
Del Taco took the #1 spot
-
KFC came in at #2
-
Chick-fil-A followed at #3
Despite this high ranking, KFC executives admit they’ve lost ground in consumer spending metrics.
New Menu Additions and Marketing Push
Beyond giveaways, KFC is expanding its menu with items like fried pickles and its new Comeback Sauce, all part of its effort to stay relevant in a saturated market. The brand’s messaging focuses on nostalgia and redemption, hoping customers will give them another shot.
“We’re fired up to remind America exactly who we are,” said Tan-Gillespie.
The Chicken Chain Wars Are Heating Up
Fast-food chains are fiercely competing not just in flavor, but in customer loyalty, branding, and innovation. With Post Malone-themed stores and NBA partnerships in play, KFC’s comeback plan will need more than just free food — but it’s a strong first step in a crowded space.
