Itamar Ben-Gvir Faces Global Backlash After Gaza Flotilla Detentions

Itamar Ben-Gvir is once again at the center of international controversy after videos surfaced showing the far-right Israeli minister taunting activists detained during the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla bound for Gaza.

The footage triggered criticism from foreign governments, human rights advocates and even allies inside the Israeli government, placing renewed attention on Ben-Gvir’s long history of inflammatory rhetoric and extremist political activism.

Videos from Gaza flotilla detentions spark outrage

The controversy erupted after Ben-Gvir promoted videos showing activists detained by Israeli police following the interception of the Gaza-bound flotilla.

In one clip, the minister waves a large Israeli flag over detainees whose hands appeared bound.

Another video shows Ben-Gvir shouting “Am Yisrael Chai” — Hebrew for “The nation of Israel lives” — at a kneeling detainee with zip-tied wrists.

Additional footage showed detainees forced into an outdoor holding area while Israel’s national anthem played and armed guards surrounded them.

The scenes prompted widespread backlash internationally and intensified scrutiny of Israel’s treatment of activists connected to humanitarian missions involving Gaza.

Ben-Gvir’s history of extremism predates politics

Before entering mainstream politics, Ben-Gvir spent decades associated with Israel’s far-right fringe.

As a teenager, the Israeli military barred him from compulsory service due to his extremist views.

He later became a follower of radical rabbi Meir Kahane, founder of the banned Kach movement.

Ben-Gvir has been convicted multiple times on charges that included:

He first gained national notoriety in 1995 after removing a hood ornament from then-Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin’s car shortly before Rabin’s assassination.
