Hasina’s son accuses Yunus govt of using judiciary for political witch hunt

Sajeeb Wazed, son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has labeled the interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus a “political witch hunt,” alleging the judiciary is being weaponized to suppress Awami League figures.
Wazed’s claim surfaced in a detailed post on X, following Bangladesh’s interim administration sending India a diplomatic note requesting Hasina’s extradition to face charges before the International Crimes Tribunal. The tribunal, Wazed argued, is a “farcical trial” set up by judges and prosecutors appointed by the unelected Yunus regime, and aimed at persecuting Hasina’s party allies.
He alleged that beyond arrest warrants, the interim government is orchestrating extrajudicial killings, mass imprisonments, and violent raids targeting Awami League activists. “The kangaroo tribunal and subsequent extradition request come while hundreds of leaders and activists are extrajudicially killed… illegal incarceration of thousands…and violent attacks…going on with impunity every day,” Wazed wrote.
Hasina, 77, fled to India in August amid nationwide student-led protests that ended her 16-year rule. The tribunal has since issued arrest warrants accusing her and several former ministers of crimes against humanity and genocide.
Bangladesh’s foreign ministry has confirmed Hasina was formally asked to return from India for judicial proceedings. Meanwhile, Wazed has defended his mother and called for an impartial, independent inquiry into events surrounding her removal—urging transparency and accountability.
As strain between Dhaka and New Delhi deepens, the political stakes rise: India has so far only acknowledged receipt of the note from Bangladesh but has yet to comment on possible extradition.
