Russian Strike on Kyiv Kills 13, Injures 132 in 2025 Attack

Russian Missile Strike Kyiv 2025: Dozens Killed and Wounded in Overnight Attack
At least 13 people, including a 6-year-old boy, were killed and 132 others injured during a Russian missile and drone strike on Kyiv overnight, Ukrainian authorities reported on Thursday. It marked one of the deadliest assaults on the capital in recent months, with 14 children injured, including a 5-month-old girl, in what officials called the highest child casualty toll from a single attack since the war began.
Residential Building Collapses as Rescue Crews Dig Through Rubble
Kyiv officials said a large portion of a nine-story residential building collapsed in the Solomianskyi district. Emergency crews worked through the night searching for survivors trapped under the debris.
Yana Zhabborova, a resident and mother of two, described the chaos as explosions shattered her home’s windows and tore off doors. “It is just stress and shock that there is nothing left,” she said.
309 Drones and Missiles Launched in Overnight Barrage
Ukraine’s air force reported that Russia launched 309 Shahed drones and eight Iskander-K cruise missiles. While 288 drones and three missiles were intercepted, five missiles and 21 drones hit civilian targets across Kyiv, Poltava, Dnipro, Sumy, and Mykolaiv regions.
At least 27 locations in Kyiv were struck, damaging over 100 buildings, including schools, hospitals, and universities.
Other Cities Under Fire as Russia Claims Strategic Advances
In Donetsk, Russian forces shelled a five-story building in Kramatorsk, killing one person and injuring 11. Meanwhile, Moscow claimed its troops had fully captured the strategic city of Chasiv Yar, although Ukraine denied any change in control. Open-source maps indicate parts of the city remain contested.
Russian Sites Also Hit in Ukraine’s Response
Russia’s Defense Ministry reported shooting down 32 Ukrainian drones, with debris halting rail traffic in Volgograd. A fire also broke out at an industrial site in Penza, though no casualties were reported.
Zelenskyy: “Peace Without Strength Is Impossible”
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as a clear rejection of international peace efforts. “The world once again saw Russia’s answer to our desire for peace,” he wrote on Telegram. He urged Ukraine’s allies to follow through on military support and increase pressure on Moscow.
U.S. President Donald Trump warned earlier this week that Russia has until August 8 to show progress in peace talks, or it will face new sanctions and tariffs.
