Etihad expands China routes with 28 weekly flights

Etihad Airways is significantly expanding its presence in China with the launch of five new routes and 28 additional weekly flights, marking one of the airline’s largest capacity increases in recent years.

The move will bring Etihad’s total service to mainland China to 35 weekly flights across six destinations, reinforcing the growing economic ties between the United Arab Emirates and China.

Expansion targets key economic hubs

The new routes will connect Abu Dhabi with five major Chinese cities:

  • Shanghai
  • Guangzhou
  • Chengdu
  • Hangzhou
  • Shenzhen

These destinations complement Etihad’s existing service to Beijing Daxing International Airport, creating a network that spans China’s key financial, manufacturing and technology centers.

Flights will be operated using the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, a long-haul aircraft designed for efficiency and passenger comfort.

Partnership strengthens connectivity

The expansion is supported by a joint venture with China Eastern Airlines, enabling coordinated schedules and deeper access to domestic Chinese markets.

The partnership is expected to improve connectivity for both business and leisure travelers while strengthening bilateral economic cooperation.

Cargo and trade gains

Beyond passenger travel, the additional capacity will significantly enhance cargo operations.

Through partnerships with logistics carriers such as SF Airlines, Etihad aims to streamline the movement of high-value goods, including electronics, across one of the world’s busiest trade corridors.

Phased rollout through 2027

The expansion will be implemented in phases, starting in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the full schedule in place by the end of the first quarter of 2027.

China remains a strategic priority for Etihad as it continues to rebuild and expand its global network.

The Etihad expands China routes strategy underscores the airline’s focus on long-term growth and its role in supporting trade and connectivity between Asia and the Middle East.
