Severe weather threatens 50 million across Midwest and Plains

More than 50 million Americans are under threat from a fast-moving storm system stretching from Texas to Michigan, after a wave of tornadoes and destructive winds swept across the Midwest a day earlier.

The system is expected to intensify Tuesday, bringing the risk of strong tornadoes, large hail and damaging winds to major population centers including Chicago, Detroit and Milwaukee.

vThe latest alerts follow a turbulent Monday, when at least 14 tornadoes were reported across Kansas, Minnesota, Iowa and Wisconsin. In some areas, baseball-sized hail caused widespread damage, while high winds ripped roofs off buildings.

In Ottawa, Kansas, a suspected tornado injured at least three people and tore through parts of the city. Nearby communities reported dozens of damaged homes, with emergency crews and the Red Cross assisting displaced families.

Now, the threat is shifting.

Forecasters have issued a level 3 out of 5 “enhanced risk” across parts of the Midwest and the south-central Plains. Areas of concern include:

  • Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin
  • Northern Indiana and southern Michigan
  • Central Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City

Meteorologists warn that conditions are favorable for rotating storms capable of producing tornadoes.

The impact is already extending beyond wind damage.

In Michigan, days of heavy rainfall combined with melting snow have triggered significant flooding. Rivers have surged past record levels, including the Manistee River, which exceeded its previous high-water mark.

Authorities have warned of infrastructure risks, including potential dam failures. Residents downstream from key structures have been urged to evacuate as a precaution.

Further east, the system is expected to reach parts of the Northeast later Tuesday, bringing strong wind gusts from Pennsylvania through New York and into New England.

Storms could develop during the afternoon and continue into the evening, adding to an already volatile national weather pattern.

The danger isn’t over yet.

Another round of severe storms is forecast for Wednesday, with the threat zone stretching again from Oklahoma through the Midwest and into parts of the Ohio Valley.

For millions across the country, the coming days could bring repeated rounds of dangerous weather—keeping emergency crews on alert and communities bracing for more impact.
