DC gala shooting suspect targeted Trump officials

WASHINGTON — The man accused of opening fire outside the White House Correspondents’ Dinner sent writings to family members shortly before the attack that outlined grievances against the Trump administration, according to U.S. officials.

Investigators say the suspect, Cole Tomas Allen, 31, expressed political anger and referenced government policies in a message reviewed by authorities. The writings did not name Donald Trump directly but made repeated allusions to his administration.

Writings point to possible political motive

Officials described the message as rambling and deeply personal, combining apologies to family with political complaints and religious references.

Authorities are treating the writings, along with social media posts, as key evidence in understanding the suspect’s mindset.

Law enforcement officials said Allen referred to himself as a “Friendly Federal Assassin” and criticized a range of policies, including U.S. actions targeting drug-smuggling operations.

Family alerted police after receiving message

According to investigators, Allen’s brother contacted police in Connecticut after receiving the writings.

Local authorities then notified federal agencies, triggering a broader response as the investigation unfolded.

Allen’s sister told investigators he had legally purchased multiple weapons in California and stored them without their parents’ knowledge.

Attack unfolded minutes into event

The shooting occurred Saturday night at the Washington Hilton, where the annual dinner had just begun.

Authorities say Allen attempted to breach a security checkpoint while armed with a handgun, a shotgun and knives.

He was tackled by security personnel before reaching the main ballroom. During the confrontation, several shots were fired.

A federal agent was struck but protected by a bulletproof vest.

Inside the ballroom, guests took cover under tables as security agents escorted Trump and other officials to safety.

Suspect acted alone, officials say

Authorities believe Allen acted alone.

“He set out to target members of the administration, likely including the president,” said Todd Blanche in a television interview.
