New York Knicks Championship Parade Draws Massive Crowds in NYC
The New York Knicks championship parade brought thousands of fans to lower Manhattan on Thursday as the city celebrated the franchise’s first NBA title in more than five decades.
Supporters lined Broadway for a historic ticker-tape parade honoring the Knicks after their 2026 NBA Finals victory over the San Antonio Spurs. The championship marked the team’s first title since 1973 and sparked one of the largest celebrations in recent New York sports history.
Fans Pack Broadway for Historic Celebration
The parade began at 10 a.m. ET near Battery Park and traveled north along Broadway before ending at City Hall.
According to the New York Police Department, all official viewing areas reached capacity before 8 a.m., forcing authorities to close access to additional spectators. More than 10,000 NYPD officers were deployed to secure the event, making it one of the largest planned security operations in city history.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani described the celebration as a regional event that extended beyond the city itself.
“It could very well end up being the largest parade in New York City history,” Mamdani said during an appearance on Good Morning America.
Jose Alvarado Celebrates Championship at Home
Knicks point guard Jose Alvarado called the moment especially meaningful because of his connection to New York.
“I’m from here, and it’s just home,” Alvarado said. “I’ve been a Knicks fan since I was born. Seeing everything happen is hard to put into words.”
The championship run has resonated deeply with fans who waited decades for another NBA title. The Knicks last appeared in the NBA Finals in 1999 before finally ending their championship drought this season.
Players Receive Keys to the City
At the conclusion of the parade, Mayor Mamdani presented members of the team with keys to New York City.
The honor was awarded to the Knicks roster, including stars Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges, and OG Anunoby.
The custom-designed key was the first presented by the current mayoral administration.
Alicia Keys also performed “Empire State of Mind” during the City Hall celebration, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Championship Means More Than Basketball
Karl-Anthony Towns, who grew up in neighboring New Jersey, described the title as a once-in-a-generation moment for the region.
“To see great New York teams have that moment and for it to finally be our time is something you dream about as a kid,” Towns said.
He added that the championship felt like “healing happening in real life, in real time” for Knicks supporters who had endured decades of disappointment.
Mikal Bridges joked that one of his priorities during the parade was bringing his dog along for the ride.
Knicks Continue Historic Season
The Knicks secured the NBA championship with a dominant 4-1 series victory over the San Antonio Spurs, completing one of the franchise’s most memorable playoff runs.
The celebration also marked the franchise’s first ticker-tape parade. Previous championship teams in 1970 and 1973 celebrated elsewhere in New York rather than along the famous Canyon of Heroes route.
Team owner James Dolan confirmed this week that the Knicks have accepted an invitation to visit the White House to celebrate their championship.
With a citywide celebration, a championship trophy, and a place in franchise history secured, the 2026 Knicks have delivered a moment New York fans waited more than 50 years to experience.
